We a roja, you a roja... Jose celebrates Spanish victory

Week 5 in Lakonikos Bay and much has happened! Our crew now includes two families: one is from Sweden, the other from Alabama. Five new volunteers have also arrived: Ross, Amy, Meghan, Craig, and Isaac. With 16 people living on site and 2 families helping out, the group has become quite sizable.

Despite the incessant and steadily increasing heat of the day, we are accomplishing a lot! The kiosk continues to be open daily, with many visitors. Everyone is excited when they are able to share information about the turtles in English, German, Spanish, French, Greek, or any other language (including grand hand gestures and pointing enthusiastically at photos in the handouts) with the tourists. In addition we have successfully located 22 nests on the beach, and have begun to prepare for the hatchlings as our first nest is due to erupt in the next week or so. Somehow we even managed to fit in a night survey and the whole group of volunteers observed their first nesting turtles.

This week we celebrated Jose's 21st birthday, and he made amazing Spanish tortillas for all! Also, after many nights of exciting world cup games, we all became Spanish for a night with our red t-shirts and cheered La Roja on to victory. There is little doubt that Jose became the most excited person in all Greece as Spain won the Mundial for the first time ever!
