ARCHELON Rescue Centre
The first of the Lakonikos crew 2010 have officially arrived in Greece! Before beginning to set up camp, we stopped to visit the Rescue Centre in the Glyfada district of Athens. The Sea Turtle Rescue Centre receives injured turtles from all over the country, which receive special treatment for rehabilitation before being released into the wild. The Centre, run by ARCHELON (http://www.archelon.gr), has been in operation since 1994, and exists as the first Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in the Mediterranean.
School children from all over Greece come to the Rescue Centre with the approval of the Ministry of Education to learn about turtles and the importance of conservation.
Mina (female loggerhead) has been at the Centre for seven years. She came with a head injury and has a buoyancy problem, caused by air trapped in the carapace. Weights are attached to the carapace to help her dive.
