Relocating a nest on morning survey

Another report coming back from the camp in Greece, everyone’s settling in well here and getting back to work after enjoying a well deserved day off over the weekend as well as a group Sangria/pizza party which ended in the local jaunt ‘Ocean Bar’, It was great to feel and see the group really bonding and it gave everyone a chance to let down their hair (although the 7am morning survey was not fun).

We had a new arrival on Sunday; Becky a newly qualified nurse from the UK. Soon a new Greek troop-leader should be arriving although she is currently a nameless mystery but it’ll be nice to have new peeps in the camp.

Since the project started this year we now have found over 30 tracks and have 10 official nests. We have named Amy the ‘mother hen’ as she has the uncanny ability to find the eggs while sitting on them! Definitely a sight not to be missed!

‘mother hen’

In the last week we (the volunteers) have found our first egg chamber on the beach, which was exciting and had a lesson in tracks from the famous Neil. Yesterday we also did one of very few nest relocations completed each season. It involved us moving all the turtle eggs from the original nest to a hand-dug nest. It was incredible to hold the eggs they were like tiny squishy ping-pong balls. We found a grand total of 123 eggs, however last year the biggest nest relocated was over 160 eggs!!!

Then today some of us finished the morning survey with a fun human burial and a refreshing skinny dip, I guess you never know what to expect!!

I’m sure next time we report back we’ll have more fun stories to pass on and remember to take a look at the few pictures we’re managing to post.

Big Dave plunging to certain death!
